What we do differently

Every correction on this site comes with four things: what you wrote, what it should be, other options where they exist, and the reason in plain words. Where possible you also get a test you can run in your head, so that next time you do not need us.

Lessons are written so that a ten year old can follow them. Grammar terms are not avoided, because you need them to read any other grammar resource, but each one is defined the moment it appears.

Who writes this

How the lessons are checked

• Every rule is checked against established English usage before it is published.
• Examples are written for this site. Nothing is copied from a book or another website.
• Where American and British usage differ, both are shown and labelled rather than one being presented as correct.
• Where a rule has genuine exceptions, the exceptions are on the page. Leaving them out makes a lesson feel tidy and leaves the learner wrong later.

What we will not claim

We do not publish accuracy percentages for the checker, because a single number would hide what it does and does not cover. Instead, the tools page lists exactly which categories are checked and which are not.

We also do not claim the checker replaces a teacher or an editor. It handles mechanical errors. Judgement about argument, order and tone still needs a person.

Your writing is never uploaded

The checker, dictionary included, downloads to your browser and runs there. Nothing you type is sent to a server, stored or logged. You can verify this in your browser’s network tab.

Tell us. A grammar site with an error in it deserves to be corrected quickly, and readers spot things we miss. Use the contact page.
